    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Thursday (December 12, 2024), the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee sent a message to the armed groups in Syria in the event that they try to approach the Iraqi border.
Committee member Waad Al-Qaddo said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "Any armed element in Syria who tries to approach the Iraqi border will be killed. We cannot be lenient with those armed groups, which now pose a threat to Iraqi national security."
He added, "Iraq has taken all military and security measures to confront any emergency that may occur on the border, and the forces holding the land there are ready for any confrontation, and therefore those groups must be careful and not approach Iraq, and any approach will be met with all severity and firmness."
Yesterday, Wednesday (December 11, 2024), the spokesman for the Joint Operations and head of the Security Media Cell, Major General Tahseen Al-Khafaji, confirmed Iraq’s success in securing its borders with Syria, through a series of “strong” security measures represented in establishing defensive lines and strengthening the border guard forces with modern weapons and equipment.
Al-Khafaji said in a press statement, "The Joint Operations Command took important measures years ago to control the borders with Syria, which included establishing defensive lines and strengthening the Border Guard Forces Command with important weapons, equipment and supplies," noting that "the field visits of the Minister of Interior, the Chief of Staff of the Army and the Deputy Commander of Joint Operations to the Iraqi borders aim to see the strengthening of the security sectors and ensure their effective deployment."
He added that "internal security can only be achieved through controlling the borders," noting that "Iraq has succeeded over the past years in preventing any infiltration of the terrorist organization ISIS across the borders," explaining that "more than 150 terrorists were killed by the Iraqi Air Force during the current year, in addition to killing other terrorists by the security sectors."
Al-Khafaji stressed that "the successful security operations resulted in neutralizing and eliminating terrorist groups in complex geographical areas such as the desert, valleys, Hamrin Mountains, and Wadi Hawran," noting "the ability of the security forces to reach these areas with great determination and flexibility."
He continued, "The security situation on the Iraqi border with Syria is completely different from what it was in 2014," noting that "our western borders have become completely secure thanks to the reinforcement of the Iraqi forces and the Popular Mobilization Forces, in addition to the use of equipment such as advanced weapons, night vision goggles, cameras, and drones."
