    Economy News - Baghdad
The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs set, on Thursday, the last date for correcting the status of illegal foreign workers in Iraq, while confirming that their recruitment will be limited to skilled workers only to develop local expertise.

Director General of Labor and Training Osama Majeed Al-Khafaji said in a statement reported by the official news agency, and reviewed by "Al-Eqtisad News", that "the ministry faces multiple challenges as a result of the multiplicity of entities that grant entry visas to foreign workers, which has affected its role in this file

." Al-Khafaji explained that "the Council of Ministers issued several decisions, including a decision dated 7/1/2024 to adjust the legal status of illegal workers," indicating that "the number of illegal foreign workers whose status was corrected reached 5,600 workers in the previous law."

He pointed out that "the many appeals from Syrian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi workers who entered through the Kurdistan Region prompted the issuance of a new decision to adjust their legal status, with the last date for correcting their status being 12/25/2024."

He stressed that "the ministry is working in coordination with the Directorate of Residence Affairs and the Intelligence Service to form inspection teams that conduct surprise visits to projects to monitor their compliance with labor and residence laws. In the event of illegal workers, they are transferred to the Directorate of Residence Affairs for deportation."

He pointed out that "employers are obligated to pay financial insurance estimated at two million dinars for each foreign worker, which is returned to them in the event of compliance with the laws or confiscated in the event of a violation."

Al-Khafaji added that "the recruitment of foreign workers is currently limited to skilled workers only, in accordance with the directives of the Minister of Labor, with companies being obligated to train national workers to gain experience and gradually reduce reliance on foreign workers."

He stressed "the need for investment and oil companies to adhere to the decisions of the Council of Ministers, which stipulate employing 80% of national workers versus 20% of foreign workers," calling on "illegal workers to expedite the correction of their status within the specified period."
