    The Texas Veterans Commission invites you to attend the 17th Annual Veterans Summit which will be held on February 4 in Austin.
     
    The summit's theme is Strengthening the Foundation: Building a Better Future for Veterans, and the honorable George P. Bush, Texas Land Commissioner, Veteran and an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve, will be a featured speaker.

    Breakout panels during this year's summit include mental health, Hazlewood Act, women Veterans, employment, Veterans engagement, entrepreneurship, Veteran courts and more.

    The Texas Veterans Commission Women Veterans Initiative is hosting a 5K and Fun Run on February 28 to kick off Women Veterans Month in March.
     
    One thing is for certain, you must ROCK THAT CAMO! How? Paint your face or put on your favorite camo, you decide! There will be prizes for the best dressed participant, best dressed kids and largest organization/company group participating.
     
    The run will be held at Camp Mabry in Austin and is open to the public.

    Texas Veterans Commission is accepting applications for Veteran Entrepreneur Academy
     
    Applications are still open for the inaugural Texas Veterans Commission Veteran Entrepreneur Academy. The Veteran Entrepreneur Academy is a 120-day program followed by a two-year mentorship with the Texas Veterans Commission designed to provide Veteran Entrepreneurs with a strong foundation in small business basics. The program consists of onsite and online classes.
     
    Active duty and honorably discharged Veterans or their spouses who complete the training will receive a Certificate of Completion and are eligible for up to a $35,000 loan at a fixed interest rate of five percent, though some restrictions apply. Applications must be received by January 26.

    Veterans benefit fair hosted in Waco VA Hospital
     
    The Veterans Land Board will be hosting a free Veterans health and benefit fair in Waco on January 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
     
    Officials from the Texas Veterans Land Board will be on hand to provide information on state programs including land, housing and home improvement loans as well as Texas state veterans’ cemeteries and nursing homes for veterans.
     
    Joining them will be representatives from the Texas Veterans Commission and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Veterans wishing to discuss pending claims with VA officials should bring pertinent case information, including claim numbers if available. 
     
    The fair will be held at the Waco Veterans Hospital Stracke Auditorium, Bldg 6, 4800 Memorial Drive, Waco, TX 76711.

    Demonstration in San Antonio held for Texas Wide Open for Veterans website
     
    A demonstration of the new website TexasWideOpenforVeterans.com took place Jan. 14 in San Antonio and featured Texas Veterans Commission Chairman Al Cantu, Texas Workforce Commission Commissioner Hope Andrade and San Antonio Mayor Ivy R. Taylor. 
     
    The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), in partnership with the Texas Veterans Commission and Texas.gov, launched the website for transitioning veterans seeking to put down roots in Texas after completing military service and offers Veterans a one-stop opportunity to explore resources.
     
    TexasWideOpenForVeterans.com is also a tool for Texas employers who want to hire from this unique pool of talented, experienced job seekers.
