11 Teachers Found Guilty in Biggest Cheating Scandal in U.S. History

     April 3, 2015

Here is your teacher Union legacy. This is what happens when you let government schools have control.
    Check it out:

Atlanta cheating scandal teachers go to cells in hand-cuffs: Eleven educators face up to 20 years in prison for inflating their students’ test scores to get bonus money for their schools . . . and for themselves

    • The 11 teachers, testing coordinators and other administrators were convicted Wednesday of racketeering after a five-year investigation
    • Evidence of cheating was found in 44 schools across the Atlanta school system, with nearly 180 educators involved
    • A racketeering charge could carry up to 20 years in prison and most of the defendants will be sentenced on April 8
    • The cheating came to light after The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported in 2008 that some student’s scores were statistically improbable
    • Prosecutors said the educators were guaranteed bonuses by inflating scores, while improving the poor reputation of their school system
    • Superintendent Beverly Hall , the alleged ringleader who received up to $500,000 in payouts , died of breast cancer as the scandal went to trial
    • One principal would wear gloves to erase answers and write in new ones

In one of the biggest cheating scandals of its kind in the U.S., 11 former Atlanta public school educators were convicted Wednesday of racketeering for their role in a scheme to inflate students’ scores on standardized exams.

The defendants – including teachers, a principal and other administrators – were accused of falsifying test results to collect bonuses or keep their jobs in the 50,000-student Atlanta school system.

The educators fed answers to students or erased and changed the answers on tests after they were turned in to secure promotions or up to $5,000 each in bonuses, the court was told.

However the person accused of benefiting the most from the conspiracy, Superintendent Beverly Hall – who is thought to have received up to $500,000 in bonus payouts – died of breast cancer over the course of the trial.

When you incentivize the education system based on students scores..... this has to be an expected result. There are many other ways to monitor the status of the education system, Those ridculous test they make the students take each year to see where they are compared to other Schools.... Its the only thing the education system teaches the kids... how to do good on that one test. Don't even get me started on the public education system and how it caters to the lowest common denominator instead of rewarding greatness in the kids and looking for new and creative ways to challenge our kids to get them to think outside the box... Its just a robot factory

The college life is similar. All it takes is to figure out how to pass the tests and a person can ace the class with no learning involved; and the upper level class peeps have a lot of practice. I am definitely guilty of this myself, but I like to think its for classes that are not degree related. To me it seems like the teachers lower the difficulty of the test so everyone has more of a chance of passing. Furthermore, unless a person takes the time to study the material to actually learn the topic (above and beyond kinda thing) just doing the bare minimum will earn an A in the class. I have been an A (with a few B's) student for three years now, now granted I go above and beyond, but I can see that there is a huge skills gap in the students who are gifted or hard workers compared to those who just doing what they can to get by. I have heard a student say D equals diploma.... it really does amaze me. Lastly, theses students that barely get by can get important jobs to such as doctor positions. There will always be the student ranked at the top of the class, but there is also the student on the bottom.

    AMEN!!!

I do feel though that whether the teachers like the system or not, there is still no excuse for doing what the teachers and administrators did in this school. The level of cheating this particular group committed was astonishing to me.
