Parl''t panel discusses recent Kuwaiti-Iraqi border incident

    17/03/2013 | 05:28 PM | Kuwait News

    KUWAIT,
March 17 (KUNA) -- The Kuwait's National Assembly's Foreign Affairs
Committee discussed Sunday with Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Khalid
Suleiman Al-Jarrallah and Iraqi Ambassador to Kuwait Mohammad Bahr
Al-Uloom the recent incident on the Kuwaiti-Iraqi borders.

    In
statements to reporters following the discussions, the committee
rapporteur MP Taher Al-Failakawi unveiled that Al-Jarallah has presented
to the committee detailed information about the situation on the
borders and the joint efforts to complete border demarcation as per UN
    resolutions.

Last week, Kuwait expressed dismay to the United
Nations over a protest by stone-throwing Iraqis against teams working on
maintaining border signs on the Kuwaiti side of the borders.

    In
his presentation, Al-Jarallah told the committee that the incident was
triggered by rumors about Kuwaiti bulldozers razing a number of Iraqi
houses on the border line which prodded angry protesters to hurl stones
at both Iraqi and Kuwaiti border guards. In response, security forces on
both sides fired gunshots in the air to disperse the crowds.

    The
Kuwaiti official stressed that Kuwaiti border teams and its
accompanying forces did not destroy any Iraqi property. Al-Jarrallah,
however, stated that there are a number of Iraqi houses and farms
breaching the border line and Kuwait has agreed with Iraqi government on
compensating their owners and building new homes for them, at a
    three-kilometers-distance away from the borders.

    Kuwait has also
deposited the compensations of these Iraqi properties at the UN
    ,
Al-Failakawi said quoting Al-Jarrallah. He added that the maintenance
teams have completed work on the 205 km-long border line except for only
405 meters on which the Iraqi properties stand, between the border
    signs 104-105.

Al-Jarrallah expressed gratitude for the Iraqi government's cooperation in completing the maintenance of border signs.

    For
his part, Iraqi Ambassador Bahr Al-Uloom acquainted the committee with
the Iraqi point of view about the work and the recent incident.

The Iraqi Ambassador's view, according to Al-Failakawi, did not differ much from that of Kuwait.

    Bahr
Al-Uloom has stressed that the Iraqi government is keen on settling the
borders demarcation file with Kuwait as soon as possible.
