China mobilizing troops, jets near N. Korean border, US officials say

    Published April 01, 2013
    Washington Free Beacon

China has placed military forces on heightened alert in the northeastern part of the country as tensions mount on the Korean peninsula following recent threats by Pyongyang to attack, U.S. officials said.

Reports from the region reveal the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) recently increased its military posture in response to the heightened tensions, specifically North Korea's declaration of a "state of war" and threats to conduct missile attacks against the United States and South Korea.

According to the officials, the PLA has stepped up military mobilization in the border region with North Korea since mid-March, including troop movements and warplane activity.

China's navy also conducted live-firing naval drills by warships in the Yellow Sea that were set to end Monday near the Korean peninsula, in apparent support of North Korea, which was angered by ongoing U.S.-South Korean military drills that are set to continue throughout April.

North Korea, meanwhile, is mobilizing missile forces, including road-mobile short- and medium-range missiles, according to officials familiar with satellite imagery of missile bases.

Question is, why are they there? Are they there as a show of support to Kim Jung Un or to rein him in? It isn't in China's best interests for Kim to go off half-cocked; they have a defense treaty with N. Korea and could easily be dragged into any confict that he might start. This is ultimately what happend in Korea in the 50's and why we ended up fighting Chinese troops there. China really doesn't need to be fighting us right now. They aren't ready yet. It's a bit like when England and France declared war on Germany after Germany and the Soviet Union invaded Poland. Germany didn't think they would go to war despite the fact that they had a defense treaty with Poland. They thought wrong and the war started in 1939; Germany wasn't ready yet. They hadn't planned to start such a war until much later, but they thought they could get away with Poland just as they had Austria, Czechoslovakia, and the Ruhr valley. A bit different in that China is not the aggressor here, but potentially the one being dragged into the frey; similar in that they are not ready to fight us yet. Their Army isn't too bad, but their Air Force and Navy are not yet ready to challenge ours. Remember that China is the land of Sun Tsu. "The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting." What they would really like to do is be in a position to say "you can fight us if you like, but if you do you will lose," and be in a position where it is obviously true. That way we back down and they win. They are not there yet.

Kim has problems at home. Before he can live the good life as king of the heap he has to prove he is worthy to serve in that position. In reality, this is probably saber rattling on their part so he can prove to the military and suffering folks back home who are literally starving while he lives the good life, that he can stand up to the big bad United States and is ready, willing, and able to use military force to do so. The problem is that it can get out of control. He can back himself into a corner where he HAS to take some sort of military action, or something can go wrong accidently. There is no doubt that we can defeat N. Korea. Heck, S. Korea could probably do so by theirselves. But in the process a lot of damage will be done, a lot of people will die, and ultimately, one never knows exactly what will happen.

No one gives a flying flip about N. Korea. They can stay in their country, eat tree bark, and worship Kim Jung Un to their hearts content. Its when they start threatening nuclear strikes and renewing the state of war against S. Korea that people get a bit ansy. They have a large army, and at least some atomic weapons. This means the threat has to be taken seriously.

Perhaps they can't really hit the US yet, but they CAN hit South Korea and Japan, both allies. Both could have nukes if they wanted them (they have the know-how and resources to do so). They don't because the United States has guaranteed their safety under our nuclear umbrella. This is a good thing because it cuts down on the number of countries that have nuclear weapons, which cuts down on the possibility that they might actually be used. It is a bad thing in that it commits us to a path we might not want to go down. And if we renig on our treaties then our word means nothing and the whole balance of power in the Pacific changes suddenly and dramatically with potentially bad results for those living there and for us as well.

China warns tensions must be 'defused' in deepening Korea crisis

Note Chinese response today - they have called a meeting of the North and South Korean ambassadors - and the US ambassador and are basically telling all of us to "Cool it".

China is acting as the adult here, seeking a diplomatic solution and in effect, sending the playground children (including us) to time out. Used to be this was a role the US played. Now, is is just another player, like any other feuding country. Wasn't this what Obama said - the US is no different than any other nation? China is playing the part here (or trying to) that the US used to play. Get used to it. Harbringer of things to come.

We will see , this kid has been flapping his jaw and if he doesn't act I would almost wager they probably kill him for the perceived weakness and embarrassment ... Thus he is now so far out on a limb he will have do something to save face IMO. Pride I guess but it always goes before a fall.
