This simple starter with an unusual name is a real party pleaser, mixing sweet, salty and savory flavors in one tantalizing bite. Save the thick-cut bacon for breakfast and use regular-cut bacon for this dish to ensure the bacon crisps up thoroughly.

  • 12 pitted Medjool dates
  • 6 bacon slices, each halved lengthwise

Preheat an oven to 400°F (200°C). Set a wire rack on a rimmed baking sheet. Line a plate with paper towels.

Place a date on top of a halved bacon slice and wrap to enclose the date. Secure with a toothpick and place on the rack-lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining dates and bacon. Bake until the bacon is crisp, about 20 minutes, turning the dates over halfway through the baking time.

Transfer the dates to the paper towels to drain, then arrange on a platter. Serve immediately. Makes 12 stuffed dates.
