Queen Caught on Camera Describing 'Very Rude' Chinese Officials
Queen Elizabeth II was caught making unguarded remarks about China’s state visit to the U.K. last year, saying its delegation had been “very rude” to her ambassador.
The queen’s comments were captured on camera as she was introduced to Commander Lucy D’Orsi, the officer in charge of security during the October trip, at a garden party at Buckingham Palace. On being told of D’Orsi’s job during the visit, the queen replied: “Oh, bad luck.”
As the commander explained that planning the visit had been “quite a testing time,” the monarch said that she was already quite aware.
“They were very rude to the ambassador,” the queen said.
D’Orsi went on to tell her how the Chinese delegation walked out on one meeting with her and Ambassador Barbara Woodward. “Extraordinary,” the queen replied.
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s trip to the U.K. was hailed by Prime Minister David Cameron as a bonanza for British business but was criticized by others who said he was much too warm toward his visitor.
“It’s a bit embarrassing but won’t be a big surprise to anyone who has been involved in these visits before,” Tim Summers, a former British diplomat who is now a senior consulting fellow at Chatham House in Hong Kong, said of the queen’s comments. “It’s more like each side has its own way of doing things and neither is very flexible. But I must say that to walk out of a meeting with your hosts is a bit rude.”
The Associated Press said that a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, Lu Kang, declined to address the remarks directly, telling reporters at a daily news briefing in Beijing that Xi made a “very successful visit” to Britain.
