The more we find out about the jihadi who slaughtered scores of nightclub goers at a club in Orlando, the more we find he was driven by Islam.

Omar Mateen had been interviewed by the FBI twice for Islamic terror ties, and had once been on a terrorist watch list. James Zirkle, who went to high school with Mateen, claimed on FOX News that “he [Mateen] was alright until 9/11 happened, [then] he started acting totally different.” He cheered 9/11. Zirkle also claimed that Mateen stood up in front of classmates one time and claimed Osama bin Laden was his uncle.

Two former high school classmates at two different schools remember Omar Mateen saying something to the effect that Osama bin Laden was his uncle. The classmates said that the September 11 attacks seemed to be a significant moment for him.

In an interview with CNN’s Drew Griffin, the imam at the Fort Pierce Islamic Center, Dr. Syed Shafeeq Rahman, says Mateen was playful and more social when young, but recently kept to himself. Mateen would come two or three times a week.

“CNN: Orlando Shooter Claimed Osama Bin Laden Was His Uncle After 9/11,” Breitbart, June 13, 2016:

Sunday on a special edition of CNN’s “Outfront,” network correspondent Brian Todd discussed his reporting on Orlando shooter Omar Mateen and his interactions with some of his high school classmates.

According to Todd, after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorists attacks, Mateen had claimed terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden was his uncle.

“We spoke with people who knew Mateen at two different schools in the Port St. Lucie area – at Martin County High School and at Spectrum Junior and Senior High School in Stuart, FL,” Todd said. “Both of those schoolmates told us that Omar Mateen’s mental state seemed to change after Sept. 11. Both these schoolmates said Mateen said out loud at that time that Osama bin Laden was his uncle. Not clear if he said it in a serious way or if they took him seriously. But they did tell us that he got brushback from a lot of kids when he said that. Another classmate, however at Spectrum, told us that Mateen did not stand out to her as someone who could possibly do something like this, Erin.”
