Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Mitch Marner’s dazzling goal against Florida Panthers another sign of his rare skill

TORONTO — Pull all of the adjectives you want out of your pocket thesaurus. You might eventually find one that describes the goal Mitch Marner scored against the Florida Panthers on Thursday night at the Air Canada Centre.

And how about those Leafs: They’re 7-2-0 (8-6-3 overall) at the ACC. In 2015-16, the Leafs won a total of 14 games at home, the fewest wins by a club on its own ice in the NHL.
Back to the Marner goal, which came at 17:03 of the first period. With Panthers defenceman Michael Matheson draped on his back and trying to get his stick in the way, Marner ignored the backside heat and set out to deke through former Toronto goalie James Reimer in his first game against the Leafs.

That’s what happened, with the final act of the deke the prettiest, as Marner, inches from the goal line, pulled the puck back to his forehand and scored.
The goal was Marner’s seventh, and we’re seeing with every game the 19-year-old has skills that precious few others boast. If you’re a card-carrying member of Leafs Nation, you’re going to be rejoicing at similar Marner goals well into the future. There’s no doubt about that.

“I think every time you step on home ice, you still can’t believe it,” Marner said. “A hundred years of this team and we are part of that now. Things going forward (are) going to be different and we are all excited for that.
“I was committed to going on the backhand (on the goal), I think a lot of people thought I was going to do that and at the last second I wanted to try to make a move and see what happened.”
Of course, Marner has friends in the youth movement. Before he had the crowd of 18,931 gasping, Connor Brown recorded his first two-goal game in the NHL, and later added a pair of assists for a four-point performance.
For the second time this season, the Leafs scored three goals in the first period.
“I don’t think we thought these guys were going to be this, this … (at this point, three reporters, including this one, said ‘impactful’ simultaneously),” Morgan Rielly said. “What was that? Impactful. That was awesome, there you go. Impactful.
“(For Marner to) make a move like that, in close like that, at that speed, that is a move that not many guys can do. And then to put it in, not every day you see that.”
It’s not just a Marner move or a great night from Brown, whose smarts have allowed him to sharpen his defensive play. Auston Matthews remains stuck in a goal-less rut, but had another six shot attempts. William Nylander’s confidence is growing, as is Zach Hyman’s bear-down mentality.
“We are comfortable here,” Brown said. “We’re getting better each game we play and it’s only up from here. It was one of those games where the puck was following us a bit.”
Leo Komarov, James van Riemsdyk (who leads the Leafs in scoring with 17 points, one ahead of Marner) and Jake Gardiner also scored for Toronto.
Goaltender Frederik Andersen had another strong, composed night in the Toronto net, finishing with 26 saves.
Reimer made 24 saves for the Panthers, who dropped to 8-8-1 and lost at the ACC for the second time in three weeks.
There’s lots of hockey to played before spring, and in the bigger picture, the Leafs haven’t proven anything yet. What’s clear is the potential and the growing sense in the room that an organizational shift is taking root.

“We think we can beat anybody in this league,” Rielly said. “You have that attitude every day. Long story short, you want to be playing in May and June. That’s how we feel.”
