WRAP: FLYERS WIN STREAK ENDS AT 10 in 3-1 LOSS IN DALLAS

The Philadelphia Flyers winning streak came to an end at 10 games as the team suffered a 3-1 setback to the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center on Saturday afternoon. The game entered the third period tied at 1-1, just as last Saturday's game did in Philadelphia but, this time, the Flyers were unable to find an equalizer after Dallas took a 2-1 lead.

Radek Faksa, Adam Cracknell and Jordie Benn (empty net) scored for the Stars. Taylor Leier scored his first goal in the NHL to enable the Flyers to take a 1-0 lead to the first intermission. Flyers rookie defenseman Ivan Provorov hit the crossbar and later the goal post during the Flyers unsuccessful push late in the game. Antti Niemi earned the win with 31 saves on 32 shots. Steve Mason played well in stopping 25 of 27 Dallas shots but saw his personal eight-game winning streak end.

The game saw only one power play aside. Neither team scored.

In the game's opening minute, a backchecking Jakub Voracek broke up a promising Dallas rush. Mason, at the 55-second mark, covered a bouncing point shot on goal. Mason then swallowed up an Adam Cracknell right circle shot at 2:20.

Niemi made his first save at 4:35, stopping a Shayne Gostibehere shot through some traffic. A long distance save on Lyubimov, followed by a TV timeout, knotted the shots at 2-2 with 13:09 left in the first period. Wayne Simmonds nearly had a tap-in on pass that missed connections around the 9:30 mark.

With 10:11 remaining in the first period, Mason stopped a perimeter shot and a scrum ensued after the whistle. Mason stopped a 3-on-2 rush after a dangerous turnover up high in the offensive zone and a nine-foot tip by Devin Shore.

After a bizarre late-whistle icing against the Flyers, Philly got the game's first goal. With the middle of the ice wide open, Leier went hard to the net, collected a Nick Cousins rebound off Niemi's pads and rammed it home from the doorstep for his first NHL goal. Time of the goal was 16:44.

Shots in the first period were 11-7 in the Flyers' favor. Attempted shots were 28-21 in Philly's favor. The Flyers had seven attempts blocked and missed the net on 10 other attempts. The Flyers blocked eight Dallas shots, and the Stars missed the net on six other attempts. Radko Gudas was charged with four giveaways. Philly won nine of 15 faceoffs, led by Claude Giroux and Brayden Schenn each going 4-for-6. Ivan Provorov led all Flyers in the first period with 8:01 of ice time. Del Zotto was credited with five hits.

Niemi made the second period's first save, stopping a harmless Gudas shot at the 28-second mark. At 1:57, Spezza tried to spark his team by fighting Brandon Manning, who lost his balance at the end.

The Stars won a battle down low and Mason juggled a shot by at 2:53 but the Flyers recovered and Mason was able to freeze the loose puck for a stoppage.

Mason and the Flyers paid the price for an Andrew MacDonald turnover and bad rebound as Dallas tied the game at 4:48. A Roussel shot from outside the left circle dots rebounded to Faksa in the left slot, who pounded the puck home to knot the score. Roussel and Brett Ritchie got the helpers on Faksa's fourth goal of the season.

Gostisbehere erased a Flyers neutral zone turnover and blocked a shot out of play at 6:06 of the second period. A TV timeout ensued. Provorov joined the rush for a scoring chance at about he 7:15 mark. At 9:00 or so, Mason fought off a point shot through layers of traffic.

Philly was called for too many men on the ice -- the game's first penalty that produced a power play -- at 9:39 of the second period. VandeVelde missed the net on a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush. The Flyers killed the penalty and nearly had a good counterattacking chance as it expired.

Mason made good saves on Klingberg (12:37) and Seguin (13:04) to keep the game tied. The Flyers seemed to have their first power play on a blatant slashing-the-stick penalty on Cracknell on at 13:27. The penalty box door opened but no penalty was called as the rush was deemed offside. A double deflected Provorov shot nearly bounced into the net.

Johnny Oduya left the game with a lower-body injury in the second period.

Mason came up with a pair of good stops in tight at one end and then, at 18:13, Niemi made his best save of the second period to deny a blast by Giroux from the right slot. Flat on his back, the Finn held on for a stoppage.

Shots in the second period were 14-6 in the Stars' favor (21-17 Stars overall). Attempted shots were 29-22 in Dallas' favor; 50-50 split through two periods. The Flyers had four shot attempts blocked in the second period (11 overall) and missed the net twice (12 times overall). Philly blocked five Dallas shots (13 overall) and Dallas missed the net 10 times (16 misses overall).

Niemi came out of the net and picked a Gudas point shot for the first save of the third period in the opening half minute. Dallas then iced the puck. The Flyers won the draw and Schenn had a good chance but wiped out in front.

Dallas took a 2-1 lead at 2:27 as Cracknell beat Gudas to a loose puck and jammed in the rebound of a Klingberg point shot for his fourth goal of the season. Seguin got the secondary assist.

On the next shift, Giroux attempted a one timer from the high right slot but the shot took off out of play at 2:54. Gudas pinched for a good scoring chance but could not get the shot through and the Flyers flurried in deep in the Dallas zone but could not put a puck home as play passed the five-minute mark. Niemi stuffed Raffl near the post to the goalie's left.

Mason came up big to keep the game with one, stoning Faksa in close after Manning turned the puck over under pressure. A Provorov turnover on a stretch pass attempt led to a dangerous chance for Spezza with time ticking down near the 12-minute mark.

With 11:05 left on the clock, the Stars took a sloppy icing under no pressure. The Cousins line gained possession off the next draw but could not quite get to the net. Leier later nearly scored on a wraparound. As time moved past the midway point, Provorov beat Niemi cleanly with a rising shot from the deep slot but hit the crossbar.

MacDonald defended a Dallas rush well and blocked down a shot to end a potential threat. Gostisbehere had an open lane for a shot but got blocked. The Flyers then flurried and after a long delayed penalty, with Niemi denying Voracek and finally got their first power play at 17:02 of the third period. Jordie Benn went off for hooking.

Philly had trouble getting set up. Voracek had a shot blocked down. Dallas generated multiple clears. Provorov appeared to hit another post late in the advantage. The Flyers pulled Mason for an extra attacker.

With 17.1 seconds left, the Stars iced the game with an empty net goal. Jordie Benn scored it long distance. Brother Jamie and Faksa assisted on his second goal of the season. The Flyers winning streak ended at 10 games.
