The Montréal Canadiens have signed and extended goaltender Al Montoya to a two year contract worth an annual average of $1.065 million US dollars. It is a fair contract for the netminder who has been a consummate pro while in Montreal and deserves better than just the four wins that he has recorded this season. It is certainly not an easy task to be Carey Price’s backup.

In eleven games so far Montoya has a record of 4-4-2 with a goals against average of 2.74 and save percentage of .909. However, if one takes out the 10-0 debacle to the Columbus Blue Jackets back in November, Montoya’s numbers are a very respectable 1.98 GAA and .932 save percentage. He has provided a veteran presence in nets and on most nights has given his teammates an opportunity to win. Not much more can be asked of a backup goaltender.

The contract extension serves the Canadiens in two ways. Firstly, it is a reward for Montoya for his strong play and the way that he has seamlessly fit into the team. Price has had a carousel of backup goaltenders and the extension lends stability while allowing Charlie Lindgren to continue to develop in the AHL.

Secondly, the Canadiens now have two goaltenders with experience signed under contract and will be able to expose Montoya come the time for the Las Vegas expansion draft. As it previously stood, the Canadiens would have faced a penalty for not having a goaltender available as Lindgren and Zach Fucale do not have enough NHL experience and Yann Danis is not signed past this season.

For Montoya, it was an easy decision to decide to resign with the Canadiens (comments courtesy of Canadiens.com):

"I'm just happy to be back. We have a good group here, with a chance to do something special, and I just wanted to be a part of it," shared Montoya following practice. "This is probably the best organization I've ever been a part of. In terms of the way we're treated here, you couldn't ask for better, so for me it was simple; I get to play hockey and enjoy myself. It makes the job easier on the players”.

Now that it is 2017, only time will tell if Marc Bergevin will be able to come to terms with Alexander Radulov as well.

There were no changes to the lineup at practice on Monday morning as Zach Redmond and Ryan Johnston alternated on the third defensive pairing with Mark Barberio. Any lineup changes will be announced after the morning skate in Nashville on Tuesday. A full game preview will posted following the skate. None of the current injured Canadiens will accompany the team on the road trip. Unfortunately, Habs fans will not have the pleasure of seeing Shea Weber go head to head against P.K. Subban as the latter has suffered a herniated disk injury and is out of the lineup.
