    [rtl]The 137-member Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference was launched in St. Petersburg on Saturday.[/rtl]
    [rtl]More than 150 countries, including 100 parliamentarians, 70 parliamentarians and 2,300 guests, including 840 parliamentarians, will participate in the conference, which will be held under the theme of "Promoting Multiculturalism and Peace through Dialogue among Religions and Customs."[/rtl]
    [rtl]"President Vladimir Putin will address the conference," Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.[/rtl]
    [rtl]The conference will discuss several issues, notably a draft Russian document entitled "The 20th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Democracy, the role of the United Nations in the management of international affairs and the steps to be taken in this regard."[/rtl]
    [rtl]"The IPU conference is characterized by the election of a new president on the last day of the conference, and despite the right of any person to run for the post, it is customary for the regional groupings to nominate themselves for this post."[/rtl]
    [rtl]Two women, the head of the International Relations Committee of the Mexican Parliament, Gabriela Cuevas, and the Uruguayan Senator Yvonne Pasada, are currently competing for the post.[/rtl]
    [rtl]Iraq is participating in the conference with a delegation headed by Speaker of Parliament Salim al-Jubouri.[/rtl]
    [rtl]Al-Jubouri will meet with the heads of the parliaments of Russia, Turkey and Iran, as well as a number of Arab and international parliaments, to discuss a number of important issues, including the recent referendum crisis and the importance of the society's performance.
