    [ltr]The Palestinian presidency on Monday called the United States vetoing a resolution on Jerusalem in the UN Security Council as "contemptuous" of the international community, while President Mahmoud Abbas called acceptance of a US role as a mediator in the peace process.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"The use of the American veto is condemnable and unacceptable and threatens the stability of the international community because it is contemptuous of it," Palestinian presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina told AFP.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Washington on Monday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning US President Donald Trump's decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Abu Rudeina added that "this American step is negative and in defiance of the international community, and will contribute to the strengthening of chaos and extremism instead of security."[/ltr]
    [ltr]Shortly before the Security Council vote, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reiterated his rejection of Washington's role in the peace process.[/ltr]
    [ltr]The Palestinian president will leave the Palestinian territories on Tuesday for Saudi Arabia to meet Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz.[/ltr]
    [ltr]"We reject the United States as a mediator or a political partner after its position on Jerusalem as the united capital of Israel," Abbas said before the meeting of the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah.[/ltr]
    [ltr]Abbas said that the United States "a genuine partner in the Balfour Declaration I, and we were cheated and deceived because from the first day we asked in 1920 to be the United States on behalf of Britain, but we found that it adopts Zionist work to this day."[/ltr]
    [ltr]Abbas stressed the determination of the Palestinian leadership to go to the United Nations for full membership, noting that the Palestinian Authority has the specifications of the state and borders better than Israel.[/ltr]
