Vatican City, October 30 - Pope Francis called for peace and reconciliation in conflict-torn Iraq during his general audience in St Peter's Square on Wednesday.
The appeal followed over a dozen incidents that claimed scores of lives in Iraq last weekend as part of a wave of violence that has been on the rise since April.
On Wednesday Francis greeted a delegation of Iraqi civil authorities and representatives of various religious groups. "I invite you all to pray for the dear nation of Iraq, unfortunately affected daily by tragic episodes of violence, in order that Iraq might find the way that leads to reconciliation, peace, unity and stability," Francis said.
