[ltr]A Florida-based FALCON-9 rocket from Florida on Wednesday carried a communications satellite produced by Luxembourg as part of a plan to expand NATO surveillance and enhance its ability to deter cyber attacks on NATO countries.[/ltr]
[ltr]The missile was launched at 4:25 pm (2125 GMT) from the US Air Force's Cape Canaveral Air Base after the flight was delayed for 24 hours due to a technical malfunction.[/ltr]
[ltr]This is the second rocket launched by SpaceX owned by billionaire Elon Mask this year.[/ltr]
[ltr]The launch comes a week before the California-based company is scheduled to conduct the first test of the larger and more powerful Falcon Heevi rocket than the Falcon 9. The new communications satellite is part of a joint venture between the Luxembourg government and a private communications firm to meet the country's growing defense obligations NATO. Luxembourg's defense minister, Atene Schneider, told a news conference on Tuesday that the new satellite, JAVSAT-1, would provide services including enhanced electronic protection for its EU partners and its Atlantic allies, including the United States. The moon will also serve as the security of civil communications.[/ltr]
[ltr]SpaceX said that after a 34-minute flight, the satellite successfully launched into its orbit, where it will settle at an altitude of 36,000 km and will orbit the Earth for 15 years.[/ltr]
[ltr]A spokesman for Defense Minister Schneider said the $ 279 million moon, weighing about four and a half tonnes, was part of a larger policy to double its country's contributions to NATO.[/ltr]
