[ltr]Iranian President Hassan Rowhani said that "Americans are shamelessly threatening the Russians with a new nuclear weapon," after Washington published a document outlining the plan to strengthen its nuclear capabilities.[/ltr]
[ltr]"The same people who are supposed to believe that the use of weapons of mass destruction are a crime against humanity are talking about new weapons to threaten their opponents or to use them against them," Rouhani said in a televised address on Sunday.[/ltr]
[ltr]Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif earlier warned his Twitter account that the US document threatened "to make humanity closer to annihilation."[/ltr]
[ltr]The new US nuclear doctrine focused mainly on Russia as it modernizes and expands its nuclear and other strategic systems, asserting its "determination to return to confronting the superpowers," according to US officials, but the document also cited China, Iran and North Korea.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed its deep disappointment about the anti-Russian orientation, which was characterized by the new American nuclear doctrine, stressing that the charges against Russia were not related to reality.[/ltr]
