Former CIA director John Brennan criticized President Donald Trump's attack on Special Envoy Robert Miller and congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on winning the election, while Trump defended himself after criticism.
"I think Trump is afraid of the Russian president and one can only guess why," he said. "The Russians may have personal information about him that they can re-employ and make his life more difficult."
He added that it is clear that his country should improve its relationship with Russia, but Trump's admiration for Putin and his reluctance to make any negative comment on him make him think he is afraid of something.
Senior Republican John McCain criticized Trump's congratulations to Putin, saying "Presidents do not lead the free world by congratulating tyrants in false elections."
This comes after Trump announced Wednesday evening that he had discussed with Putin, by telephone, the possibility of a close meeting between them, to discuss ways to curb the arms race, adding to reporters, "congratulated him on his electoral victory."
Local media also reported that Trump congratulated Putin despite warnings from national security advisers that he should not take this step.
"I called President Putin to congratulate him on winning, the false media lost their senses, because they wanted to criticize him, they were wrong, normalization with Russia and others should be normalized," he said in comments on Twitter.
