Claudio Discalzi, CEO of Eni, told shareholders at their annual meeting that the major energy company of Italy has recovered all its outstanding dues from Iran for previous investments and has no plans for any new projects there.

Disclazy was answering questions after Washington decided to impose new sanctions on Iran and renounced an international agreement signed in 2015 to curb Tehran's nuclear activities in return for lifting US and European sanctions.

Disalzi said the only remaining activity for Eni in Iran was a monthly purchase of two million barrels of oil under a contract that expires at the end of the year, adding that any sanctions would take six months to begin.

Such supplies could be obtained from sources elsewhere.

Inpex Corp, Japan's largest energy exploration company, said it may abandon its second bid to develop the South Azadgan oil field after US President Donald Trump warned that he would re-impose sanctions on Tehran.

The company's comment shows the state of confusion in which potential investors have fallen into Iran's economy because of Trump's withdrawal from a 2015 deal to impose restrictions on Iran's nuclear program.

Inpex abandoned a 10% stake in Azadegan in 2010, as US sanctions on Iran made it difficult to obtain funding for the project.

According to Wood Mackenzie Energy Consultancy, Azadjan is one of the largest oil discoveries in the world in the last 30 years, with reserves estimated at 33.2 billion barrels of crude.

Oil production in the fields was planned to reach 600,000 bpd.

The lifting of the sanctions in 2016 after the conclusion of the agreement opened the door for Inpex to participate again in the development of the oil field.

"We realize it's hard for us" to participate in the bidding process after the Trump decision this week, an Inpex spokeswoman told Reuters by telephone.

US President Donald Trump has announced that he will withdraw from Iran's multilateral nuclear deal and reinstate US sanctions on Tehran as much as they were suspended under the 2015 agreement.

Other energy projects, including Iran's $ 1 billion Total Natural Gas Project, Unless the company obtains exemptions.

While governments in Europe and Asia are still trying to delay sanctions by salvaging some aspects of the deal with Iran, analysts have little hope that opposition to US action will shift without restraint.

Energy consultant Frydoon Visharaki said Europe and Asia would not be able or willing to deal aggressively with US sanctions.

In fact, no one will prefer Iran to the United States. "
