    The Presidential Committee on Freedoms in Tunisia has put forward an unprecedented number of proposals for social reform that provide for equality in inheritance, non-criminalization of homosexuality and abolition of the death penalty.

    "This is a revolutionary project and for all Tunisians," said Bouchra Bahaj Hamida, at a press conference devoted to presenting the report, calling for a discussion of sociologists, political scientists, psychologists and specialists in religious sciences.

    The Committee did not set a timetable for the course of the report, which was submitted to President Béji Kaid Sibsi.

    The proposed reforms focused on two axes: discrimination between women and men and violations of individual freedoms.

    In August 2017, Tunisian President Béji Kaid Sibsi formed the Committee on Individual Liberties and Equality to include a group of experts to prepare proposals for social reforms consistent with the provisions of the 2014 Constitution on individual freedoms.

    The Committee published on June 8 a report containing proposals to revise the principles inspired by the Koran and adopted in the Arab and Islamic countries, and draft laws ready for transmission to Parliament.

    It introduced alternatives to unprecedented and unprecedented reforms relating to equality in inheritance and, in this regard, a draft law based on the principle of gender equality and the freedom to divide inheritance between women, men, children, daughters, fathers, mothers and spouses.

    The bill also calls for full freedom for parents to be divided and in case of disagreement, the proposed law guarantees women the right to demand equality.

    Another critical issue addressed in the report was the cancellation of the period of time for divorcees and widows who wished to remarry. The Committee's proposal in that regard provided a first step to cancel the period in case of loss or death of the husband prior to the construction process.

    The proposals included abolishing the death penalty or restricting its application to crimes that led to death, as well as not criminalizing homosexuality and deleting chapter 230 of the Penal Code, which criminalizes homosexual behavior.
