The Syrian army has recovered a region in the southwest of the country from the hands of opposition fighters in the first significant progress of government forces in the framework of a campaign near the Jordanian border caused the displacement of tens of thousands, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and official media said on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) and the Syrian Observatory said that two Israeli missiles landed near Damascus airport on Monday night. An Israeli army spokesman declined to comment on the report.
Sana said rocket strikes near Damascus International Airport showed Israel's support for opposition fighters in the south-west of the country.
The south-western region of Syria is strategically sensitive because of its proximity to the border with Jordan and the occupied Golan Heights. The United States and Russia, Assad's strongest ally, agreed last year to create a "scaled-down" zone that helped contain violence there.
"The Syrian army has taken control of the town of Basra al-Hariri and the nearby al-Lajj area and is now heading south," SANA and media affiliated with the Lebanese Hezbollah group allied with the Syrian government said.
Government control of this area cuts off opposition territory in northeastern Daraa province, where President Bashar al-Assad has stepped up attacks despite US warnings.
The United States told the Syrian opposition that it should not expect military support to help counter the attack, according to a copy of a letter sent by Washington to leaders of the Free Syrian Army factions in the region.
The United States has repeatedly warned Assad of violating the "easing escalation" zone and said it would have "serious consequences" and pledged "firm and appropriate action".
Opposition groups issued no statement on the progress of government troops.
The United Nations said on Tuesday that fighting had driven at least 45,000 people to flee their homes in southwestern Syria and head towards the border with Jordan.
"We expect the number of displaced people to more than double as violence escalates," said WFP spokeswoman Bettina Lucher in the same press release.
The World Food Program (WFP) provides food for 30,000 people and intends to deliver more in the coming days across the border from Jordan.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Israeli strikes targeted stores belonging to non-Syrian factions loyal to the Syrian government and containing an arms shipment from Iran.
Iran is a key ally of Assad and supports several factions, including the Lebanese Hezbollah group, which is fighting in support of the Syrian regime.
Israel, worried by the growing Iranian presence in Syria and fearing its security, has bombed dozens of Iranian sites and sites supported by Iran in Syria during the seven-year-old war.
