    Iran's ambassador to Iraq, Iraj Masjedi, said Tuesday that the Iraqi passports at the consulate were safe, while participating in the opening of the consulate building in Basra that the relations of Iraq and Iran are strategic and brotherly.
    "The consulate fire has long been a place of prayer and there are supplications and Korans and they are one of the fact that the burning of the consulate has nothing to do with Iraq," Masjedi told a news conference after the opening of the new building of the Iranian consulate in Basra.
    He added that "the relations between Iran and Iraq are strategic and fraternal and will not be affected by the fire of the consulate," adding that "there is military, economic and cultural cooperation with Iraq."
    "Our common enemy is trying to sabotage our relationship with Iraq, but Iran will always stand with Iraq, especially Basra," he said.
    "The damage to the consulate was material and all the staff were taken out before the burning and the operation violated the moral principles and the government has to identify the culprits," he said.
    He added that "trade exchange was not affected by the burning of the consulate, and will increase the need for a joint," noting that "the port of Shalamjah and all ports are open with Iraq."
    On the water crisis in Basra, Masjidi said that "the problem of water in Basra is due to drought and lack of rain in all the region, including southern Iran, which is experiencing the same suffering."
