The Ministry of Electricity announced Monday that an investigation had been opened following a report in the Wall Street Journal that General Electric was seeking energy sales in Iraq, but the report highlights corruption concerns.
The report, prepared for General Electric, said its employees were concerned about corruption in Iraq, while the US Justice Department declined to comment.
"In response to the report published in the Wall Street Journal, the Minister of Electricity, Louay Khatib, directed the Office of the Inspector General of the Ministry to investigate what he said."
He added that "the ministry's vision for the next phase depends on two essential factors equal in importance, the efficiency in providing Iraq's electricity and financial and administrative integrity in all sections of the ministry."
The ministry stressed that "it seeks to address all aspects of corruption and to bring the corrupt to justice within the administrative and legal contexts. It is also keen that the anti-corruption efforts do not prejudice the reputation of its members without evidence. Therefore, the ministry invites the newspaper to present its documents and evidence of Report ".
