On Wednesday, the United States reached an agreement with Iraq to withdraw the American combat forces in the country, turning the mission of Washington and the international coalition to confront the "Islamic State" in Iraq into a mission of "training and advice." President Joe Biden is seeking to withdraw US forces from Iraq and Afghanistan, in rare harmony with the policy pursued by his predecessor, Donald Trump.

Washington and Baghdad agreed during the talks on Wednesday to withdraw the last [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] combat [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] where they are still deployed to confront the extremists of the "Islamic State".
The two countries affirmed in a joint statement following these hypothetical strategic talks that "the mission of the United States and the coalition forces has turned into a (mission) training and advice, thus allowing the redeployment of any combat force still in Iraq, provided that the timetable (for that) will be determined during future talks." .
This decision comes as US forces in Iraq are exposed to almost daily [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] attributed to armed Shiite factions linked to Iran.

Trump had ordered the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan in the last months of his term, and the number of soldiers in the two countries was reduced to 2,500 in mid-January.
Former President Barack Obama, whom Biden was his deputy, had completed a complete withdrawal from Iraq, but had resumed sending troops to it in the face of the "Islamic State" attack.
The joint statement added that "the transition of US and international forces from combat operations to training, equipping, and assisting the Iraqi security forces reflects the success of their strategic partnership and guarantees support for the continued efforts of the Iraqi security forces to ensure the inability of the 'Islamic State' organization to threaten the stability of Iraq."
For its part, Iraq pledged to protect the military bases that include US-led forces, and Washington made it clear that those forces would remain on Iraqi soil "only to support Iraq's efforts in its battle against the 'Islamic State' organization."
