Poverty indicators in Iraq rose by two degrees in less than a month, while specialists in economic affairs confirm that the situation is "very ambiguous." Economic specialist Nabil Al-Marsoumi says in an interview with Al-Mada
“The numbers of the Ministry of Planning are not normal in most cases,” adding, “If we take a period before raising the dollar’s exchange rate, the price increase is not less than 20% in the local market, and this negatively affected the widening circle of poverty.”
Yesterday, Monday, the Ministry of Planning announced the rise in poverty indicators in the country to between 26 to 27 percent, after the decision to raise the dollar exchange rate to 1450 dinars, indicating that the inflation index rose by 4.9 to 5 percent.
The Ministry of Planning announced, last March, that the poverty rate in Iraq had risen to 25%. The Ministry of Planning attributed the reason for the high poverty rate to the health closure that has been in place since 2020 and the decline in oil exports.
The ministry’s spokesman, Abdul Zahra al-Hindawi, said in a statement to (Al-Mada) at the time that “according to a study conducted by the Ministry of Planning and with follow-up from the World Bank in 2020, the poverty rate reached 25%,” adding that “the poverty rate had reached 31% at the beginning of the Corona pandemic and the imposition of a ban The first roaming (March 2020) and the accompanying repercussions of low oil prices, an economic downturn and the closure of commercial centers and markets, but the percentage stabilized at 25% after lifting the embargo restrictions and easing measures in the second half of last year.
The economist adds, "The poverty rate has increased according to the degree of the sample taken by the Ministry of Planning," indicating that "the rise in the poverty index to 26-27% is a very large number in a country that is the third largest oil exporter in the world." Al-Marsoumi indicates that "the circle of poverty is expanding continuously, especially in the absence of government measures to protect the poor classes and the weakness of the government's ability to influence the commodity supply," indicating that "there is no government role in strengthening the ration card items and support for consumer cooperative societies."
Al-Marsoumi went on to say, "The country suffers from stagflation, and the citizen has lost part of his purchasing power due to the increase in the exchange rate," noting that "the economic situation is very ambiguous." The specialist in economic affairs believes that "it is assumed that there will be an improvement in economic management, as the government financial situation is greatly improving due to the high oil prices, and the difference between them is approximately 20 dollars from the estimated price in the budget." Al-Mashhadani confirms that "the naturalness of the economic administration and its inability to pump money into the artery of the Iraqi economy is the one that took the economic situation to these crises."
In turn, the specialist in economic affairs, Abdul Rahman Al-Mashhadani, said in an interview with Al-Mada that "the indicators of inflation, compared to the current situation are inaccurate, as they are measured on previous years," noting that "inflation is supposed to be measured at the end of last year or the beginning of this year. Or in the light of approving the budget.
Al-Mashhadani adds that "the statistics of the Ministry of Planning regarding poverty rates are all unofficial," noting that "the poverty rate after the rise in the dollar exchange rate is much higher than that announced by the Ministry of Planning, as it reaches more than 35%."
