Adviser to the ministers, Aoun Diab, said: For the program "Important Question" broadcast by Al-Furat satellite channel tonight, "The water resource is constant throughout the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and the reason for water scarcity is due to climatic changes, increased demand, and the reality of the conflict over water."
He added, "The rate contained in the Euphrates River is 30 billion cubic meters, and it is fixed and does not increase, but the demand has increased and a conflict will occur over it, and we are facing a future problem that will cause a shortage of up to 11 billion cubic meters in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and great measures must be taken."
Diab pointed out, "Not to be afraid of water shortages this year. Iraq has built a well-secured water reservoir for the next two years. The Euphrates and Tigris pass through 1,500 cubic meters per second, and the minimum release from Turkey is 500 cubic meters, and there is a significant shortage of Turkish water releases."
He continued, "The Ilisu Dam causes a shortage of about 16 meters of reservoir and 7 meters in the Atator dam, and we discovered that their plan to produce energy is operating, not to meet the need for water. As for the Tigris, the releases have improved, and what remains is the Euphrates, and there are contacts on the issue."
And Diab said, "What happened this year is a drought that hit all regions of the region, including Iran, but we must share the damage with the riparian countries, and we had understandings and a meeting with Iran that was postponed because of the elections, and Turkey is the main supplier of water, and Iran's influence is less."
He stressed, "There is an agreement 75 with Iran in which a protocol attached to fixing the water borders and common rivers we wanted to enter, but it remained suspended until the moment due to the Kurdistan region's rejection of this agreement, and so far there are diplomatic and people's attempts."
