The Ministry of Transport revealed, on Friday (September 3, 2021), that the number of trains operating in the country at the present time to transport passengers is 13, stressing that the General Company for Railways is one of the profitable companies.
The Ministry's spokesman, Hussein Al-Khafaji, said in an interview with  IQ News , that "trains and railways development projects are continuing in the country in order to advance their reality and provide the best services to passengers," noting that "the ministry is working to rehabilitate the lines and trains that were damaged as a result of the entry of ISIS." for the country.”
He added that "the alternative station of Mosul was opened two weeks ago, and soon the first train to transport passengers from Mosul to Baghdad and vice versa will be launched with daily trips," noting that "local engineering cadres worked to rehabilitate the line linking Baiji and Mosul."
And he indicated that "the ministry is now working on the rail link project with Turkey, and the reactivation of the line linking with Syria to transport passengers and goods," stressing that "the number of trains operating in the country at the present time to transport passengers is 13."
And he continued, "All passenger trains are modern, and we will also work to restore all destroyed lines to service, in addition to introducing new trains," noting that "the number of train passengers per month varies according to the movement of citizens if it reaches hundreds per month, but more trains move in time. The current one is in the province of Basra, so 3 trains depart weekly to go towards Baghdad, and 3 to return to Basra.
He pointed out that "the General Company for Railways in previous years was a loser, but after the rehabilitation and development of trains and transport lines, and the signing of a contract to transport oil from Baiji district towards the port of Umm Qasr, the company became one of the profitable companies in the Ministry of Transport."
