Farming associations: Water resources have reduced the cultivated lands, and the country will pay for imports
Shafaq News/ The Union of Farmers' Associations confirmed today, Thursday, that reducing agricultural lands to 50% will push Iraq to import vegetables from abroad.
The advisor to the president of the federation, Hossam Muhammad, said in an interview with Shafaq News Agency; "The Ministry of Agriculture has prepared an agricultural plan that includes the winter areas for field crops, vegetables and various crops," noting that "what affected this plan is the Ministry of Water Resources, which issued the plan to reduce the areas at the wrong time."
Muhammad pointed out that "the association prepared the agricultural plan in July for the winter agricultural areas up to all Iraqi governorates, amounting to 13 million acres, but we were surprised that the Ministry of Resources reduced it to 50%," noting that "before that, the farmers prepared the land for winter cultivation, plowing and fertilizing it. And spend a lot of money on it."
Muhammad pointed out that "the date set by the Ministry of Resources was unsuccessful, as it was supposed to announce the reduction of the area in July in order for the farmer to prepare to reduce agricultural land, and the Ministry of Resources did not abide by its previous pledges to provide the first irrigation for winter crops."
He added that "the agricultural areas of the governorates should be determined each one separately, as Basra governorate does not depend on the two rivers of the Tigris and Euphrates for irrigation, but on tidal water, as well as the governorates of Najaf and Al-Diwaniyah depend, in their cultivation of some crops, on moisture from areas covered with grass, and other governorates depend on agriculture." Muhammad stressed that "reducing the cultivated areas to 50% is unsuccessful, and Iraq will resort to importing agricultural crops from abroad, and there will be a waste of public money."
Iraq was forced to halve the agricultural areas for the next winter season (2021-2022), after the water crisis in the country aggravated, due to Turkey and Iran reducing the imports of the Tigris River.
