     Baghdad: Shaima Rashid

A few days ago, Parliament held a session to elect a candidate for the position of President of the Republic, in light of a comprehensive halt in talks between the two rival Kurdish parties after they adhered to their candidates for the post, the Kurdistan Union, Barham Salih, and the Democrat, Hoshyar Zebari.
The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Shakhwan Abdullah, announced that the technical preparations for holding the presidential election session on the seventh of this month have been completed, stressing that the event will not be postponed.
Abdullah added, "The parliament's presidency is committed to the constitutional timings, and it is continuing the constitutional entitlement and is not linked to political differences after the names of the competing candidates were announced."
The representative of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Mahma Khalil, expected the party's candidate, Hoshyar Zebari, to win a numerical majority because the position is a Kurdish entitlement and not for a specific party, while he indicated that the meeting of Al-Hanana yesterday was positive and will be followed by another meeting with the coordinating framework.
Khalil said, "The activation of this position requires a leading national and sovereign personality, and it is not for a specific Kurdish party, and if the political maturity in society continues, the components and efficient personalities will be able to reach the position," noting that "it was necessary to hold a meeting of tenderness in Najaf with Muqtada. Al-Sadr to bridge the views between the Speaker of Parliament, Barzani and the head of the Sovereignty Alliance, and to express a new political will.
