Today, Sunday, the Supreme Federal Court of Iraq decided to stop the procedures for the candidacy of Hoshyar Zebari, by the Kurdistan Democratic Party, for the position of President of the Republic of Iraq "temporarily".
And the court's decision stated that it "has decided to suspend the procedures for electing (Hoshyar Mahmoud Muhammad Zebari) for the position of President of the Republic temporarily until the settlement of the case 17/Federal/2022."
The court added that "the decision was issued by the majority on Rajab 9, 1443 AH, corresponding to the sixth of February."
And earlier today, Sunday, a judicial source said to the agency that "the Federal Court held a deliberative session today to decide on the state order regarding the nomination of Hoshyar Zebari for the presidency of the Republic."
Iraqi politicians challenged the court's candidacy of the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Hoshyar Zebari, for the position of President of the Republic of Iraq, due to his dismissal in 2016 by the House of Representatives on charges of "corruption".
It is noteworthy that Zebari is the most prominent competitor to the current Iraqi President, Barham Salih, who is seeking to extend his term as President of the Republic of Iraq.
According to the constitutional terms in Iraq, it requires the House of Representatives to elect a president for Iraq in a session next Monday.
