The Ministry of Commerce stated that the decline in the number of shoppers was caused by the food basket items designated for Ramadan, confirming control of the markets, while it talked about taking legal measures against 50 price-manipulating traders.
"The markets are witnessing a global crisis before the Russian-Ukrainian conflict began last September," said the ministry's spokesman, Mohamed Hannoun.
Hanoun continued, "Iraq puts the food basket in a parallel line with the rise in prices, so Resolution 160 of the Council of Ministers was issued, which represents a qualitative leap in the ration card that includes equipping citizens with seven items."
He pointed out that "the Ministry of Commerce, as a result of global changes, has worked to pump large quantities of foodstuffs and is continuing the processing operations."
Hanoun stated, "The ration card vocabulary has been completed, with the completion of the first Ramadan basket and the launch of the second for all governorates, and we started with poor areas."
He stressed, "The work is to confront the rise in prices in the food basket project and to prepare it for all citizens."
Hanoun continues, "Reports of the Ministry of Planning spoke of a significant decrease in shopping from the commercial market as a result of the presence of large quantities of foodstuffs."
He pointed out, "a qualitative development has occurred with the awareness of the citizen not to go to the markets and rely on the vocabulary of the food basket."
Hannoun explained that "the process of monitoring the markets is carried out through the supervisory teams and a joint operations room with the National Security Agency and the Organized Crime Directorate of the Ministry of Interior."
He cautioned, that «the Iraqi market is open to trade, but the state intervenes if there is a monopoly, and this matter has been addressed».
Hanoun revealed, “legal measures have been taken against more than 50 violating traders, and in sum, the Iraqi market is well controlled, and the rise that is taking place is normal for what the world is witnessing at the present time, and the internal situation compared to the countries of the region is very good.”
He stated, "A number of tasks we carry out to control the markets begin with awareness and end with taking legal measures against violators."
Hanoun noted that "governmental and private mills began to supply the citizens with quantities of flour in proportions that reached 90% of the Iraqi families' need."
He continued, "Iraq has contracted to buy 150,000 tons of Australian wheat and 100,000 tons of German wheat, and we have stocks of local wheat, and we are heading today into the marketing season, which we hope will reach 3 million tons."
Hannoun said, "The food basket was a food safety valve for all Iraqis by providing all materials that were dangerous in the matter of their arrival in the country."
He stated, "The Iraqi private sector has contracted to buy large quantities of rice, legumes, sugar and tomato paste."
Hanoun concluded, "This indicates that the ministry carried out planning, and the private sector succeeded in delivering large quantities to the country."
For his part, economic expert Karim Al-Helou said that "the rise in prices during the month of Ramadan is a crisis that Iraqis experience every season."
Al-Helou added, "The government's promises to distribute three rations for the month of Ramadan have not been implemented until the present time."
He pointed out, "There are a number of accumulated problems that led to this rise, most notably the decisions related to devaluing the Iraqi dinar by raising the price of the dollar."
Al-Helou finds that "the solution to this problem is by ensuring that the ration rations reach the citizens as soon as possible.
