In a report, the French Press Agency quoted the veterinarian, Karar Ibrahim Hindi, as he was heading to treat a sick buffalo, as saying that “the veterinary ambulance boats are the first and only initiative of its kind in the swamps of Iraq.”
The report added that “the marshes between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, also known as the Mesopotamian marshes, are one of the largest inland delta regions in the world, and the wetlands barely escaped the brutality of dictator Saddam Hussein, who ordered the draining of the marshes in 1991 as punishment for the communities that were harboring them. rebels against the regime.”
He explained that "the inhabitants of the marshes earn their living from raising buffaloes, as well as from fishing and tourism, while buffalo milk is famous throughout Iraq for the strength that it is supposed to give to those who drink it, and farmers use it to make creamy yoghurt, a delicacy served to Iraqis on flat bread on the breakfast".
The report stated that "the new steamboat is being used by veterinarians as an ambulance for animals to provide the necessary health care for livestock, while it is estimated that there are about 20,000 water buffaloes in the wetlands in the marshes, but the herds vary in size." Some farmers own just a handful of animals, while others own up to a hundred buffaloes.”
Mukhtar Muhammad Saeed, director of Iraq’s Green Climate Organization, which funds the buffalo boat project, said, “Most farmers cannot transport buffaloes to the city when they get sick, so they risk making an incorrect diagnosis, so instead of going to the vets, farmers go to the vets. Veterinarians to visit them by boat.”
One of the buffalo breeders, Sabah Thamer, said, “Some of the herders have one or two buffaloes and do not have money, so the veterinary services here are free, but not the medicines that the animals may need.”
In addition to the usual disease buffaloes face, veterinarians are helping farmers meet the dual challenge of rising levels of wastewater being dumped into the water, and the devastating impact of climate change as droughts become more severe.
The report indicated that “in a country where the state lacks the ability to guarantee basic services, 70 percent of Iraq’s industrial waste is dumped directly into rivers or the sea, according to data collected by the United Nations and academics, while the United Nations ranked Iraq as “the fifth vulnerable country.” at risk in the world” to climate change.
