, the Ministry of Electricity revealed, on Sunday, a strategic plan to address the shortage of Iranian gas supplies, while confirming the continuation of supplying it from Qatar.
The ministry's spokesman, Ahmed Moussa, told the official news agency, "Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi issued directives to take care of the electricity file, as he directed the ministry and the Ministerial Energy Council to resolve the gas file related to the Iranian side."
He added, "There are periodic meetings with the Iranian side to resolve the gas file after paying the money," noting that "Iranian gas releases reach the central region only, with a volume of 133 million cubic meters per day, and do not meet the need during the peak period."
And he stressed the need for the Iraqi and Iranian parties to abide by the terms of the signed contract, especially after the cabinet’s decision to pay the gas dues in full through the Credit Fund at the Trade Bank of Iraq (TBI).
Moussa indicated, "The system is not currently operating at its full capacity due to moderate temperatures, and in the event of entering the peak, the need for gas supplies will be urgent to equip the stations," noting that "about 7,500 megawatts depend on the supplied gas."
He added, "The ministry has developed a strategic plan that is consistent with the volume of gas supplies with an emergency plan when gas supplies are reduced or interrupted in coordination with the Ministry of Oil," noting that "the need for Iranian gas is present and urgent, as it is of high technical value and free of problems."
Moussa pointed out that "the Ministry of Oil is working to ensure a fuel plan through the rehabilitation of gas fields and the establishment of refineries and a pipeline network connecting to power stations, but these projects need time ceilings," explaining that " Some power stations in the south operate on national gas, but it is not fully invested to meet the need for electricity; Therefore, the need for the supplied gas will remain urgent."
Regarding the Qatari gas file, Moussa stressed that "Iraq is proceeding with this issue, but it needs a number of logistical matters, including the establishment of gas berths and platforms and the creation of the pipeline network, and therefore this needs integrated work between the Ministry of Electricity, Oil, Transport and Finance."
Moussa said that "the ministry went to the Qatari side with government decisions to fill part of the shortfall in the context of diversifying sources of nutrition for the benefit of the system," stressing that "the ministry's efforts in this regard were good, and there is negotiation with the Qatari side, and gas will be supplied in specific proportions if the two parties agree."
Earlier today, Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi issued two new directives regarding the electricity file.
A statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office said, "Al-Kazemi chaired a meeting of the Ministerial Council for Energy, in the presence of the person in charge of managing the Ministry of Electricity and the advanced cadre of the ministry, and listened to a detailed explanation of the reality of electric energy during the coming months in the fields of production, transmission and distribution, as well as maintenance of electrical stations."
According to the statement, the meeting witnessed a discussion of the current electricity situation, the ongoing preparations to provide electrical energy, and proactive measures to address problems and obstacles that may impede increasing production and cause a potential crisis in the summer.
The meeting touched upon the mechanisms of communication with the Iranian side regarding the provision of Iranian gas, and in this regard, Al-Kazemi directed assigning a working team from the Ministry of Electricity to travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran, to solve problems related to the Iranian side regarding supplying Iraq with gas.
The Prime Minister directed the need to take practical steps by overcoming all obstacles facing production, transportation, distribution and maintenance operations. In order to ensure more hours of supplying citizens with electricity during the summer.
