Shafaq News/ The Union of Farmers' Associations in Salah al-Din Governorate complained today, Friday, of a decrease in the productivity of fruits by more than 30% due to several factors, most notably the low levels of the Tigris River, while pointing to the "exploitation" that farmers are exposed to to market their crops at "cheap prices".
Karim Kurdi al-Dulaimi, head of the Union of Farmers' Associations in Salah al-Din, told Shafaq News Agency, "Salah al-Din is famous for producing the best fruit crops that surpass many countries, but dust storms, lack of support and water scarcity have caused a decrease in fruit productivity by more than 30%."
Al-Dulaimi added that "water scarcity, the decrease in the levels of the Tigris River, and the reduction of water quotas caused the destruction and neglect of large orchards, which negatively affected the seasonal production," pointing to "other factors that affected the production of fruits, most notably the lack of government support for orchards and the absence of air control operations for pests for several years."
Al-Dulaimi warned of "exploitation and underestimation of farmers in Salah al-Din, which prompted them to market their crops at cheap prices, while they are sold in local markets at high prices."
Al-Dulaimi called on the Ministry of Agriculture to “organize the schedule of importing crops and fruits to support the local product in order to avoid serious economic damage to farmers as a result of random and unorganized import during seasonal production seasons,” stressing “the preparation of an import calendar that has the approval of farmers and stakeholders in the agricultural file in Salah al-Din and other governorates.” .
