A member of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament, Kawa Abdul Qader, confirmed, on Monday, that poverty rates have risen significantly in the region.
In an interview with the Information Agency, Abdul Qader said that "during the past two years, poverty rates have increased significantly in all cities of the Kurdistan Region, due to the corruption of the power parties."
He added that "the increase in poverty rates is due to a number of reasons, the most important of which is the failure to distribute employees' salaries on time, as well as the lack of appointments in government institutions, as well as the lack of opportunities for real investment, in addition to the high prices of foodstuffs, fuel and high taxes."
The cities of the Kurdistan region, especially Sulaymaniyah, witnessed large demonstrations and protests, as a result of the lack of job opportunities and the delay in the payment of salaries.
