Muhammad Makawi, Managing Director of Kurdistan Operations in Crescent-Dana Gas, joint operators of the Khor Mor and Chemchemal gas fields, confirmed that the region will be able to export gas and electricity to Iraqi governorates within two and a half years.
"The Khor Mor Gas Expansion Project in Iraq (KM250) has not been affected by the recent attacks, and it is scheduled to be completed in May 2023," Makawi said in a virtual event organized by Columbia University's Climate College on the release of natural gas in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
He added, "The missiles fell on open ground, and there were no damages or injuries."
Makkawi explained that "the company has plans for two other projects that will increase the production capacity from 700 million cubic feet to 1050 million cubic feet per day," according to what was published by zawya and translated by "Al-Iqtisad News."
He added, "The second project will start with a capacity of 250 million cubic feet per day immediately after the completion of the first project, assuming we get the financing, and we will also have another production project in Chemchemal. We believe that in two and a half years, we will be in a position to meet the demand for gas in the entire Kurdistan region of Iraq, and we will look to export gas or electricity to the rest of Iraq.”
The field currently provides 75 percent of the power generation requirements of the Kurdistan Regional Government.
