    Today, Sunday, the Ministry of Agriculture announced its success in increasing the number of palm trees from 12 million to 17 million, while confirming the continuation of the trend to increase the number of palm trees in the country .
    Technical Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Mithaq Abdul-Hussein told the Iraqi News Agency, "The ministry pays great attention to increasing the number of palms in the country, increasing the productivity of the single palm and the quality and varieties of palms that produce high-quality dates with economic returns for the farms."
    He pointed out that "the ministry worked to promote the increase in the number of date palms and production through programs to develop date palm textile cultivation and support campaigns to combat pests that infect palm, in addition to encouraging investment in the field of exporting dates and related technical transactions related to upgrading packaging to meet the requirements of the foreign market ."
    He added, "The date palm is a perennial tree that needs longer periods of time compared to the rest of the trees to enter production, as it needs intensive care during its growth period ."
    He pointed out that "the Ministry of Agriculture during the past ten years has succeeded in increasing the number of date palms from 12 million to 17 million, and it will continue in this direction in the coming years so that Iraq will return as a major producer of dates in the region and produce rare varieties with economic returns ."
