Experts call for a comprehensive strategic agreement with Turkey

Politicians and experts called for the signing of comprehensive strategic agreements with Turkey, and while they affirmed that the step of transferring the water file to the sovereign rather than the technical side is a "correct and necessary step," they demanded that detailed lines be defined for the water file between the two countries, especially after the recent visit of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani to Turkey. .
A member of the House of Representatives for the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, Rafik al-Salhi, said in an interview with "Al-Sabah": "The agreement that took place during the Sudanese visit with the Turkish side in terms of economic matters between the two countries is very important, as it is necessary to strengthen cooperation with the countries surrounding Iraq, and it was One of the most important of these agreements is to increase water releases from the Tigris River for a month.
He added, "The size of the drought that the country is going through and the advent of the summer season, requires the ministries concerned with this file to continue visits to Turkey to increase water quotas and increase releases towards the Tigris and Euphrates," explaining that "a period of one month is not enough, and there were supposed to be official agreements and signatures between the two countries and from During which the economic, strategic and political situation, borders and transgressions between the two countries will be agreed upon.
He continued, "There are many points that should have been addressed with the Turks, including entering the Iraqi borders and entering the Iraqi lands, and there are Turkish bases that encroached on the lands in Mosul and others, so there must be an official and strategic agreement between the two countries."
In turn, the water and agricultural expert, Tahseen al-Moussawi, said in an interview with "Al-Sabah" that "our water reserves have been depleted and we are talking about storages of about 7.5 billion cubic meters, and our monthly consumption amounts to 1.5 billion cubic meters," explaining that limiting the launch to a month did not satisfy Expectations and hopes".
Al-Moussawi added, "We need to go to alternative uses such as desalination of sea water, use of modern irrigation techniques, go to water recycling, and move away from planting strategic crops and moving away from mud lakes," stressing that "the water situation is very critical," and noted that transferring the water file to the sovereign side No technical "step is very correct, and the file must be in the hands of a higher authority."
And he indicated that "at the recent climate conference, the head of the United Nations Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) stated that the country needs the help of its neighbors from the upstream countries, but rather needs the help of the international community, because there is great abuse with Iraq regarding its water shares," noting that "the water file It is still standing and has reached dangerous stages and critical conditions.”
