Hundreds of Christian families who had fled a village north of the city of Mosul have returned home but are still in need of urgent help, according to the United Nations.
Islamic State (IS) militants are still in control of a string of Christian villages in the plateau of the Province of Nineveh of which Mosul is the capital.
IS militants had not reached Alqoush, home to one of the largest Christian communities in the area, but the village’s 6,000 inhabitants fled on hearing that the jihadists had routed Kurdish militias guarding nearby areas.
Aided by U.S. air strikes, Kurdish fighters are reported to have retaken some territory from IS, the thing that might have spurred Alqoush inhabitants to return.
However, reports say that not all of Alqoush residents have opted to return to their village. Many others have preferred to take a wait-and-see attitude.
Some have already left Iraq, seeking temporary refuge in either Turkey or Lebanon in the hope of being resettled in the west.
IS, which is also known as ISIS, had overrun four other mainly Christian villages – Tel Kaif, Baqoup, Batnaya and Tel Iskoph. The militants have repelled Kurdish militia attacks to regain these villages whose inhabitants had fled to the Kurdish Province of Dahouk.
The U.N. says more than 1.8 million Iraqis have been displaced when IS militants attacked northern and western parts of Iraq in July adding large swathes of territory to their caliphate.
