    Economy News _ Baghdad
The local government of Basra indicated a decline in the rate of water releases reaching the governorate by more than two-thirds, which contributed to an increase in salinity levels in the Shatt al-Arab waters, calling for the establishment of a navigation dam to avoid water scarcity.
This came during the second conference for national policy advocacy and climate governance networks, which was held yesterday, Wednesday, in Baghdad.
According to specialists, Basra suffers from the problem of scarcity of drinking and irrigation water, the advance of the salt lake on agricultural areas overlooking rivers and irrigation canals, and the lack of projects to address environmental pollution in the governorate.
The head of the Life Organization and researcher at the Marine Science Center at the University of Basra, Zainab Fadel Al-Tamimi, said in an interview on the sidelines of the conference held by Mercy Corps in coordination with the National Initiative to Support Renewable Energy and Reduce Emissions, that the problem in Basra is not limited to drinking water, but there A threat to the waters of the Shatt al-Arab, which suffers from numerous pollution as a result of the lack of water releases, which decreased by more than two-thirds, from 150 to 45 m3/s.
She added that this would increase the rise in salinity levels, which led to the deterioration of the agricultural and livestock sector in the governorate, calling for the establishment of a navigation dam, especially after Iran opened the waters of the Karun River that feeds the Shatt al-Arab.
For his part, Director of the Karkh Environment Police, Lieutenant Colonel Ziad Mustafa, said that the detachments of his department implemented nearly 100 orders issued against environmental violations during the current year and issued by the competent courts or the Ministry of Environment to hold violators accountable, take legal measures against them and refer them to the judiciary, noting that the formation of the general environmental police 2009 came after an increase in the dangers of environmental pollution in the country, which required solidarity to confront this challenge.
Meanwhile, a member of the National Initiative for Energy Support and Emissions Reduction team and representative of the Iraqi Media Network, Tariq Abdul Amir, pointed out that there is coordination with international organizations to confront environmental climate changes, such as (Mercy Corps), which held several meetings to discuss the environmental challenges facing the country, especially as it works to Loading international bodies to put pressure on neighboring countries to increase water releases and informing them of the extent to which their decrease affects the environmental reality of Iraq.
