The Committee for Removing Encroachments in Basra launched a new campaign to remove encroachments on green spaces and areas, districts and main streets, as part of a plan to develop vegetation and combat desertification in the center of the governorate and districts, targeting agriculture in its urban surroundings, while the Governor of Basra, Asaad Al-Eidani, described the activities of removing encroachments in the governorate as “war.” .
Al-Eidani said, in an interview with “Al-Sabah,” that “the committee to remove violations, in coordination with the security authorities, continues its active war to remove violations of the green areas in the city center areas in the neighborhoods of Al-Ashar, Tamimiyah, Rabat, and Al-Maqal, in parallel with a multi-pronged plan to plant them with different types of trees.” And shrubs and flowers,” noting that “dozens of violations have been lifted in the targeted areas.”
Al-Eidani explained, "The plan includes district centers, districts, main roads, and central islands to save Basra from the repercussions of the destruction of vegetation cover due to encroachment and the failure to hold accountable those who encroach on green areas," pointing out that "the plan encourages the revival of vegetation cover and the reduction of desertification that has spread over large areas."
In turn, the Assistant Governor and Director of the Basra Municipality, Hassan Al-Najjar, stated that “the municipality issued warnings and imposed fines against trespassers on areas, green spaces, and central islands in residential areas and main streets in the center of the governorate.”
Al-Najjar added to “Al-Sabah” that “a large-scale campaign was launched in cooperation with volunteer organizations and groups to plant green areas and central islands, in which we chose 30 types of trees, shrubs and flowers that are compatible in nature with the environment and climate of Basra.”
Al-Najjar pointed out that “the Green Basra campaign aims to develop research, experiments, and agricultural technology methods in the six municipal nurseries, which produce most of the species that are compatible with Basra’s semi-desert climate.”
The Assistant Governor explained, “An irrigation network was extended in the targeted areas, monitoring centers were opened, and the irrigation network was operated and maintained using the finest types of soil mixed with fertilizers to bury gardens, parks, and islands that were damaged due to the construction of streets and residential areas and encroachments on them for years.”
