As Iraq continues to gradually shift towards modern irrigation, various governmental, agricultural and popular circles have begun to realize and sense the importance and benefits of this technology in a country suffering from water deficit, to the point that in 2022, it consumed quantities of water 50% higher than its water revenues that year. That is, it consumed its water imports and also took part of the strategic reserves.

The Ministry of Agriculture talks about an interesting angle regarding the benefit of modern irrigation, as it expects the area of exploited land to rise to 14 million dunams.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mahdi Sahar Al-Jubouri, said, “After the lack of water revenues, climate changes, and the drought that struck Iraq in recent years, the ministry moved towards using modern irrigation systems in irrigated and irrigated areas,” according to the government newspaper Al-Sabah.

He stated that “these systems added large desert areas in addition to the irrigated areas,” expecting that “the exploited lands will reach about 14 million dunams, if these systems are distributed among a large percentage of farmers,” indicating that “the transition to modern irrigation will add large areas with minimal amounts of irrigation.” water and the highest productivity.

Based on the fact that modern irrigation adds “larger areas with less water and higher productivity,” Al-Sumaria News reviews in this report the extent of the benefit of modern sprinklers in terms of increasing areas, reducing water use, and improving productivity.

For example, Iraq consumed more than 37 billion cubic meters in 2022, even though its water imports were only 25 billion cubic meters, which means that it spent what it received as well as taking the remainder from water storages and dams.

In that year also, the cultivated and irrigated area was only 2.5 million dunums, in addition to 3.4 million dunums with groundwater.
80% of Iraq's annual water consumption goes for agricultural purposes only. This means that approximately 30 billion cubic meters out of 37 billion cubic meters went to agriculture.

However, the use of sprinklers, drip irrigation, and modern irrigation methods will reduce the need for water in the same cultivated area to only 40%. This means that of the 30 billion cubic meters, we will need 12 billion cubic meters to cultivate 6 million dunums.

This means that with 30 billion cubic meters, we will be able to cultivate 15 million dunums, meaning that modern irrigation has reduced water consumption by 60% and increased the cultivated area by 150%.

Modern irrigation not only increases the percentage of cultivated area, but also increases the volume of productivity per dunum, as the Ministry of Agriculture observed that the productivity of one dunum after using modern irrigation increased from half a million tons, to 1.25 million tons, meaning that productivity also increased by 150%.
