Mawazine News - Baghdad,
Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiab, warned of the consequences of continued failure to reform water policy in Iraq, indicating that water will not be sufficient for drinking in the coming years without effective solutions.
Diab said in a televised interview followed by Mawazine News: "The water releases coming from Turkey and Syria will enable Iraq to fully meet its needs during the coming summer period."
He added, "The best option to solve the water crisis and increase the amount of fresh water would be through desalinating seawater and purifying heavy water to reuse it again, like all countries."
He explained, "Government estimates indicate that the country's population will rise to 50 million during the year 2040, while in 2100 the number will be much larger and will not be able to meet basic needs."
