Shafaq News/ The Ministry of Planning announced today, Wednesday, that Baghdad accounts for a quarter of the slums, indicating that the government has a plan to address the slums.
Ministry spokesman Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi told Shafaq News Agency that the number of slums throughout Iraq reached 4,000, while Baghdad had the highest score among the governorates, reaching 1,73 slums, explaining that these slums were inhabited by approximately 3 million and 60 thousand people.
He added, "Baghdad ranks first with the largest number of slums, followed by Basra and Nineveh, with more than 700 random gatherings, while Najaf is among the governorates with the least number of slums, with only 89 random gatherings."
Al-Hindawi also pointed out that "one of the solutions that the government is working on to get rid of slums is to build new housing units, which has an aspect of the solution and treatment of the slum file in Iraq, given that there is a percentage of the cities that are residential for the government, which it will distribute to the deserving groups according to priorities."
The planning spokesman continued, saying, “Slums have arisen and grown in different areas, sometimes in the interior of cities or on the outskirts of cities, and other times in commercial areas or agricultural areas, depending on the circumstances that allow for the growth and emergence of slums in this or that place.”
It is noteworthy that Iraq is suffering from a stifling housing crisis due to the increase in its population compared to the number of residential complexes, in addition to the inability of citizens with limited income to build their own housing unit due to the high cost of land and construction materials.
The Ministry of Construction and Housing estimates that Iraq needs more than three million housing units to meet the housing crisis in the country.
