    Today, Tuesday (April 30, 2024), the Parliamentary Legal Committee revealed the importance of the law on purchasing freedom with financial sums, which Parliament is scheduled to read during its session.
    Committee member Muhammad Al-Khafaji told Baghdad Al-Youm, “This law aims primarily to address the large overcrowding in Iraqi prisons. It also reduces the financial burden on the government, and this law does not include all crimes. Rather, it is limited to only those accused of light crimes, and it is certain that it does.” It does not include anyone accused of corruption cases, as well as drug trafficking and other major crimes.”
    Al-Khafaji stated, “The proposal, according to its current draft, includes a proposal to grant those sentenced to a prison sentence of three years or less, the right to request the replacement of the remainder of their sentence with a sum of money such as a fine of (10) thousand dinars per day. This law will be discussed, and the opinions of the representatives will be heard, and then a formula will be come up.” finality regarding its paragraphs.”
    Earlier, the Presidency of the House of Representatives agreed to include the “buying freedom” proposal on the agenda of today’s parliament session, Tuesday, in a proposal that aims to reduce overcrowding in prisons as well as bring money into the state treasury and targets only specific categories of prisoners.
    Member of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, Raed Al-Maliki, said, “The Presidency of the House of Representatives approved the proposal and included it in the agenda,” noting that the proposed law includes granting those sentenced to three years’ imprisonment the right to request that the remainder of their sentence be replaced by a sum of money as a fine, estimated at ten thousand dinars for each. day.
    He pointed out that the proposal stipulated that the convict be convicted of minor crimes, with a condition of waiver from those with personal rights, while those previously covered by the amnesty law, and those convicted of drug trafficking crimes, corruption and other crimes were excluded.
