Mawazine News - Baghdad
Iran's ambassador to Iraq, Muhammad Kazem Al Sadiq, stressed that the relations between Tehran and Baghdad are strategic, deep and broad, saying that we assured the officials of Baghdad and the Iraqi Kurdistan region that Iran does not compliment anyone regarding its national security.
In his private interview with ISNA, Ambassador Al Sadiq touched on the latest situation regarding the security agreement between Iran and Iraq, bilateral relations between them, the Arba’een Husseiniya visit, as well as the situation in Gaza and the withdrawal of American military personnel from Iraq.
Three important points in the security agreement between Tehran and Baghdad.
Regarding the security agreement between Iran and Iraq, the Iranian diplomat in Iraq mentioned that this agreement contains several clauses, saying: There are three important clauses in this agreement, which include border control by the central government, disarming the opposition and exchanging Criminals, and it was emphasized that these opposition forces would be transferred from the border to the depths of Iraqi territory.
Al-Sadiq stated that the transportation file was completed well and camps were designed in this regard, explaining that there are three camps in Erbil and one camp in Sulaymaniyah for this matter. In the Sulaymaniyah region, where these forces are gathered, the forces of the National Union of the Kurdistan Region are building a wall to besiege these forces.
Regarding the disarmament of these elements, Al Sadiq also explained that disarmament means that semi-heavy weapons were taken from them, but saying that light weapons were taken from them must be taken into account that most of the Iraqi people have Kalashnikovs and firearms in their home, but these are not allowed. The forces possessing these weapons, and with the measures designed in the Kurdistan region, should not have an armed presence in the region.
Iran responds firmly to the threats.
In his answer to the question about the level of diplomatic relations between Iran and Iraq currently, after the two countries witnessed a diplomatic escalation following Iran’s attack on terrorist groups in the Kurdistan region on January 15, 2024, which led to Baghdad recalling its ambassador in Tehran, the ambassador said. Iranian: Our relations with Iraq are strategic, deep and broad in various political, economic, cultural and security fields, and Iraqi officials have repeatedly warned us that our national security is our red line. Unfortunately, in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, due to the presence of regional powers there, we sometimes witness hostile plans against Iran. We also do not begrudge anyone about our national security.
He stated that we told the Iraqi officials: When Iran is threatened by any party, we will respond firmly and we did that. He explained: After this incident, visits and delegations were exchanged between the officials of the two countries, and negotiations took place in a friendly and brotherly atmosphere between the two countries, and the tension between them was settled and following a visit by Amin The Supreme National Security Council, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, went to Iraq and held meetings. The Iraqi ambassador returned to Tehran, and diplomatic relations between the two countries returned to their previous state.
Regarding the size of economic relations between Iran and Iraq at the present time and the extent of their presence in the Iraqi market, especially with the presence of competitors such as Turkey, India and China, he said: We are Iraq’s primary partner in the economic field, as Iraqi funds constitute about 22 to 25 percent of our non-oil revenues.
The senior Iranian diplomat stated that the volume of trade exchange between Iran and Iraq currently amounts to about 12 billion dollars, stressing that this is a relatively good number: a quarter of this amount relates to electricity and gas export exchanges, and the rest to other commercial deals.
Iraq's debts to Iran
Regarding the size of Iraq's debts to Iran and the recent statements of the Iraqi Energy Minister that “we currently do not have any debts to Iran in this area,” he said: What the Iraqi authorities said is true.
He continued that our contracts are in dollars, but they cannot give them to us because of the sanctions, and in this context, we have created an account in dinars at TBI Bank and they deposit money in dinars equivalent to the foreign currency contract of electricity and gas that we export to this country to our account at TBI Bank. The supervisors pay and settle the bills, but we still have the problem of withdrawing the money and returning it to the country.

The supervisors pay and settle the bills, but we still have the problem of withdrawing the money and returning it to the country.
The Iranian ambassador stated that his country was well able to collect its funds during the Sudanese government, explaining: Through this money, we paid some of our debts to a number of countries, and we also purchased food and goods that are not subject to sanctions. To pay the costs of Hajj, we took money from these dues, or the debt of the Islamic Development Bank was paid through these funds, and part of our debts to Turkmenistan regarding gas exports were paid.
Turkmen gas exports to Iraq via Iran.
According to Al-Sadiq, the Iraqi government seeks to transfer Turkmen gas to its country via Iran, but have there been consultations with Tehran in this regard? He says: Negotiations in this field are continuing and good progress has been made so that the three countries can By cooperating with each other in this arena, as a result some of Iraq's problems in the gas field will be solved. A large portion of the gas imported by Iraq comes from Iran. Iraq needs more gas in the summer, but since Iran's consumption rises in the winter, it carries out a large portion of its gas exports to Iraq during the summer.
America is playing with words.
Al-Sadiq explained the latest developments regarding the issue of expelling American soldiers from Iraq: The Sudanese government has laid the foundation for ending the issue of the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq during his term as head of the government and ending this presence. In this context, two rounds of negotiations took place between Baghdad and Washington recently, but my point of view is that these negotiations were devoid of a unified discourse between the two sides, and I also told my Iraqi friends that there is no unity of discourse on this issue from both sides.
He pointed out that the Iraqis are stressing setting a timetable for withdrawal and the Americans are stressing changing the mission of their military forces. He said: The Americans, at some point, changed the mission of the military forces in Iraq to an advisory mission, and now they want to change the advisory mission to bilateral cooperation. The truth is that the Americans are playing with words, and the Iraqis must pursue these negotiations more intelligently so that the issue of withdrawal is completed as quickly as possible.
The Iranian ambassador to Iraq believed that Sudanese was serious about this matter and that the resistance forces in Iraq were also cooperating with the government and had set a date for this to happen as quickly as possible.
