    Shafaq News/ On Sunday, the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, called on the federal government in Baghdad to allocate a budget to confront climate change and reduce its negative effects on the country, stressing the necessity of cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad in this field.
    The President of the Region’s speech came in his speech during the launch of the conference on drought, climate change, and economic and demographic policies in Iraq, which was held in Erbil under his personal auspices.
    President Nechirvan Barzani said in his speech that Iraq is under the influence of climate change, according to the latest United Nations reports, and it is the fifth country to fall under the influence of climate change. This affects all aspects of life in the Kurdistan Region and the country, and causes desertification and loss of agricultural land.
    He stressed that "we lose 100 square kilometers of agricultural land every year, as they become drought-stricken and turn into barren desert, in addition to the constantly decreasing surface and groundwater, weak food security, and migration from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region to foreign countries," noting that "in recent years Internal migration occurred, as 103,000 people in Iraq left their areas of residence and were displaced to other areas, in addition to damage to community security, an increase in poverty, and high rates of health problems as a result of climate change and drought.
    The head of the region also pointed out that "the current situation has made Iraq unable to remedy these problems, and we in Iraq and Kurdistan need to work quickly in developing plans in the short, medium and long term to confront the risks of climate change and block the way to its effects," stressing that it should This issue should have priority and greater seriousness in the policy and plans of the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government.”
    He went on to say, “A budget must be secured by the federal government to confront the effects of climate change, and institutions specialized in this aspect must be granted broader powers, and an educational curriculum should be printed that pays greater attention to the field of confronting climate change, preserving the environment, and avoiding water pollution,” stressing The need to raise the level of awareness among society by awareness centers, intellectuals, academics and clergy within the framework of education on environmental protection.
    Nechirvan Barzani continued by saying, “Given that Iraq sources most of its water from neighboring countries, it is forced to pay great attention to this issue to ensure the achievement of water security,” pointing out that “the situation must be remedied and cooperation with neighboring countries and the entire world so that we can confront the situation.” Climate change".
    The President of the Region suggested developing a comprehensive national plan to confront this problem, adding, "The Kurdistan Region has many water sources, and dams must be constructed and water storage projects built."
    Nechirvan Barzani urged the Iraqi government to help and support the Kurdistan Regional Government in building dams and ponds, which contributes to water storage and reduces climate change fears, calling on the President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, to help the region in this field.
