ERBIL. Kurdistan Region - A number of Kurdish youth including a young woman have gone missing since last night after a gunman opened fire on a nightclub in Turkey's Istanbul, killing 39 and wounding dozens more.
The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Interior confirmed on Sunday that a Kurdish youth from Erbil was killed and two others wounded.
Nazhat Hussein, head of the migration affairs' department, told Rudaw that a youth named Ahmed, 22, was killed and two others wounded.
"We are in contact with Turkey's health and interior ministries to repatriate the dead and the two wounded," he said.
A friend of a young Kurdish woman who was at the nightclub but is now missing said they do not know what has happened to her. "We are afraid she might have been killed in the gunfire incident," the friend told Rudaw.
She recounted that the last time that she talked to her friend was last night at 11pm when she published some snapchat videos and sent her friend photos of New Year celebrations.
"My friend was at the place where somebody in a Santa Claus outfit opened fire on the people killing 39 persons."
She said that they were told that her friend had been wounded in the attack but nobody has been permitted to visit the hospital, so they are uncertain whether or not she is alive.
Thirty-nine people were killed and 40 others wounded in an armed attack on Istanbul’s Reina nightclub early Sunday morning, including 16 foreigners, the Turkish interior ministry said. The bodies of 21 of the dead have been identified so far, said Turkey’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, Reuters reported.
Soylu told the media that the police are hunting for the attacker, whose whereabouts are unknown.
