Baghdad: The pillar of the emirate
In recent years, desertification and drought have swallowed up vast areas of the country, in light of the significant decline in water imports from Turkey and Iran, and the adoption of old methods of irrigating agricultural lands.
About 60 percent of farmers suffer from the reduction of cultivated areas and the reduction in the amount of water used, which prompted the government earlier to launch an afforestation initiative to combat desertification and storms.
Soil. Experts believe that 23 percent of Iraq's total agricultural land area has decreased over the past three decades, calling at the same time for the adoption of modern irrigation systems and renewed negotiations with Turkey and Iran to increase releases.
Water. Academic and economic researcher Dr. Abdul Karim Al-Issawi explained in a statement to “Al-Sabah” that “the phenomenon of desertification represents a real problem facing Iraq, present and future, and several reasons lie behind the growth of this phenomenon in recent years, including the lack of rain and the wars that Iraq has experienced, which caused the fragmentation of lands and the increase in the phenomenon of demographic transformation as a result of the encroachment of the countryside into the city and the loss of agricultural efficiency.”
He added that “the high salinity rate in the soil leads to a decrease in hectare productivity by no less than 25 percent of its natural level, and the erosion of agricultural lands has led to significant reductions in the vegetation cover,” explaining that “desertification and drought have swallowed up 23 percent of Iraq’s total agricultural area.”
Al-Issawi called on the Ministry of Agriculture to pay attention to irrigation systems and work on updating them and negotiating again with Turkey and Iran to preserve the water share and continuous maintenance of the dams, with the importance of stopping the dredging of agricultural lands and introducing foreign direct investment into the agricultural sector.
For her part, the academic and economic specialist, Dr. Wafaa Al-Mahdawi, stated to “Al-Sabah” that “Iraq faces a group of environmental challenges, especially those related to climate change, as it is one of the Arab countries most affected by climate change, from rising temperatures and lack of rain and its interruption during the hot season of the year. These factors contribute to the drying of the soil.”
She added that “desertification and drought lead to the collapse of agricultural systems through a decrease in the productivity of agricultural lands,” explaining that “this is reflected in sustainable growth and empowerment.”
