[size=16]A new Pentagon report said China poses a "significant and growing threat" to supplies needed for the US military.

The 150-page report, seen by Reuters on Thursday before formally announcing it on Friday, concluded that there were about 300 points where it could be accessed in such a way as to affect critical materials and components necessary for the US military.

Reuters, on Tuesday, was the first to broadcast the main points of the report.

The analysis included a series of recommendations to strengthen US industry, including expanding direct investment in sectors that are vital, and specific plans are contained in an undisclosed confidential annex.

The focus on China was particularly strong in its report on the dominance of global supplies of rare earth elements, essential elements of US military applications.

The report also noted its presence on the world stage with regard to the supply of certain types of electronics, as well as chemicals used in US munitions.

"One of the important points of this report is that China poses a significant and growing threat to the supply of materials and technologies that are strategic and very important to the national security of the United States," the report said.

Relations with China are already fraught with a bitter trade war between the world's two largest economies, tensions over e-espionage, Taiwan and free shipping in the South China Sea.

The report could increase trade tensions with China by supporting the "Buy America" initiative put forward by the Donald Trump administration to help attract billions of dollars through US arms sales and more jobs.

US Vice President Mike Bens accused China on Thursday of seeking to weaken Trump's position ahead of November 6 congressional elections, saying it was "interfering in America's democracy."

Pens' comments echoed Trump's words at the United Nations last month when he said, "China is trying to interfere in the next 2018 election," which is denied by Chinese officials.
